Educational Philosophy

We believe in the power of educational travel.

Confucius once said, ‘I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.’ This truth is at the heart of our educational travel philosophy at ACIS. By “doing”—walking in the footsteps of emperors, seeing the art that inspires a people, or communicating in a new language—students gain an understanding of themselves and the world that will stay with them for a lifetime. It’s the ultimate in experiential learning.

Travel connects the classroom with the world.

The beginning of critical thinking is making connections. On ACIS educational tours, students connect what they’ve learned in the classroom with what they’re seeing and experiencing firsthand, for a richer and more nuanced understanding. And education on an ACIS trip doesn’t happen on a schedule, or only at designated itinerary stops; it’s woven into the fabric of every moment.

Cultural Connections offer unforgettable, hands-on learning.

The Cultural Connections included in all ACIS tours take cultural understanding to a whole new level. Through immersive activities in the arts, sports and leisure, food and more—as well as International Perspectives visits to global industry leaders—students look at the culture and history of a place from a different vantage point. From learning the art of ceiling fresco painting, to participating in a Japanese Tea Ceremony, to engaging in dialogue on how we digest news at the BBC Broadcasting House, Cultural Connections provide diverse ways to meet (and exceed!) your education goals.

We understand the different ways students learn.

All students learn differently. Some are lingual learners, some spatial, some experiential. ACIS Tour Managers are trained to work with multiple intelligences and provide a mix of learning experiences that appeal to every type of learner.

Learning objectives stay front, center and throughout.

Focused learning is effective learning. That’s why we identify three specific Learning Objectives for each ACIS tour, which will be highlighted during the trip. Whether it’s understanding difference between baroque and neoclassical art, the role of religion in the history of the British monarchy, or the challenges of rainforest conversation.

We help you prepare, to get more out of your trip.

At ACIS we believe that the more you know before your trip, the more you’ll see and experience when you’re there. Each Group Leader receives a customized trip website to help you recruit and manage your participants and to ensure you keep your educational goals in focus.
